Dan Austin, St. Vincent de Paul Juneau General Manager, Honored in Proclamation by CBJ Mayor

At the meeting of the Assembly of the City & Borough of Juneau, Alaska on Monday, August 13, 2018, Dan Austin, St. Vincent de Paul Juneau General Manager, was honored in a proclamation by Mayor Kendell D. Koelsch.  Dan Austin passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2018.

Mayor Koelsch read the proclamation into the minutes of the Assembly meeting, followed by a standing ovation of the overflowing audience in attendance, which include most of Dan’s staff from St. Vincent de Paul Juneau.  Maureen Hall, President of the Board of Directors of the Juneau Society of St. Vincent de Paul accepted the framed proclamation, on behalf of the society, recalling his tremendous compassion, commitment and contribution to the homeless and Juneau.  The proclamation, which proudly hangs in the offices of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Juneau, states:

PROCLAMATION

Honoring Dan Austin

WHEREAS, Dan was a founding member of the Juneau Coalition on Housing and Homelessness;

and

WHEREAS, today the Coalition includes over 30 social services agencies; and

WHEREAS, the Coalition positioned Juneau for some of the most effective and well-coordinated

homelessness response in Alaska; and

WHEREAS, Dan was instrumental in increasing the Saint Vincent de Paul shelter facilities by 12

units to house families; and

WHEREAS, Dan spearheaded the development of Smith Hall, housing for disadvantaged seniors;

and

WHEREAS, Dan shared his expertise and enthusiasm with other entities addressing

homelessness, including the Glory Hole and Juneau’s Housing First project; and

WHEREAS, Dan supported a street outreach program that, from January through June of 2018,

made over 200 contacts with 131 individuals experiencing homelessness; and

WHEREAS, Dan has illustrated a dedication to stewardship of limited funding for the betterment

of the lives of the poor; and

WHEREAS, Dan passed away on July 25, 2018 at age 71; and

WHEREAS, Dan Austin spent over 30 years advocating for the poor in Juneau.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kendell D. Koelsch, Mayor of the City and Borough of Juneau, Alaska,

on behalf of the City and Borough Assembly, do hereby recognize and honor

Dan Austin

for his unending dedication to the betterment of Juneau and all its citizens.
